It’s a country within a country. A tiny enclave on a hill surrounded on all sides by the historical and cultural might of Italy. Although it is less than a tenth of the size of New York City, The Republic of San Marino packs a big punch.
History of San Marino
San Marino is the oldest republic in Europe, having been established as an autonomous state in 301AD. Located in central Italy, it is the third smallest country in Europe after the Vatican and Monaco, with a total land area of 23 square miles (61 sq km). Though less than 30,000 people live in the country, it receives more than 3.5 million visitors per year.
