Ifugao Rice Terraces; Batad, Philippines

Batad, Philippines

Tradition is often compromised to make way for modern developments.

The old ways are beat out by the easiest ways.

And yet when we reflect on the loss of our culture, we do so as though it weren’t our duty to preserve it.

Now, in the age of technology, travelers are drawn to historic sites.  But seldom do we see historic practices that are still being upheld today, practices such as cultivating rice at the Ifugao Rice Terraces.Continue

How to See Angel Falls Venezuela in 3 Days

Angel Falls, Venezuela

Standing at a startling 3,212 feet (979 m), Angel Falls must be seen to be believed.

It’s so high, most water turns to mist before ever reaching the ground below. It’s over 15 times higher than Niagra Falls, almost 800 feet taller than Yosemite Falls, and taller than the Eiffel Tower and Sears Tower combined.

In other words: it’s big. Really big.Continue

The Coastal Hana Tour; Maui, Hawaii

Hana Tour; Maui, Hawaii

Maui’s coastal drive is like pure meditation. Pop mango in your mouth, fresh from a roadside stand, get ukulele music going on the radio, and embark on one of Hawaii’s great drives.

The route unravels along 52 sinuous miles (84 kilometers) of Maui’s eastern coast from Kahului to Hana and delivers black-sand beaches and azure ocean on one side and plunging waterfalls, limpid pools and bamboo jungle on the other. However, the highway has more than beauty: it is an impressive feat of engineering, dug out of Maui’s precipitous coastline by hand tools.Continue

Get Lost in Time; Molokai, Hawaii

Molokai, Hawaii

Want to escape the Hawaiian crowds and get close to the traditional alhoa spirit?

Bulabog Putian National Park; Panay, Philippines

Panay, Philippines

Take a deep breath of fresh air as you hike through the wilderness.  Soak in the suns rays before you make your way into the shade of the forest.  Cool off as you enter the caverns.  Watch your head as you dodge pesky stalactites.  Tread carefully around the protruding stalagmites.

Bulabog Putian National Park

Located on the island of Panay, the Bulabog Putian National Park is found in the municipality of Dingle.  The natural reserve has some 25 miles (40km) of trails, winding through the forest and past a series of caves.  While hiking Bulabog Putian does make for a nice day out, it’s the caves that draw hundreds of visitors a year.

Into the Forest; Toro Negro, Puerto Rico

Toro Negro, Puerto Rico

Take advantage of every opportunity to conquer nature. Reach the highest heights, head to the deepest depths, and soar over the landscape like you have wings.

When observation doesn’t satisfy that thrill-seeking urge, plan a trip to Toro Negro.

Toro Negro

On a heavily forested island, Toro Negro is a highlight among Puerto Rico’s many parks. Covering around 11 square miles (28km2), the park is a collection of dense vegetation, cool waters, and a particularly high peak.

The home of Cerro de Punta, Puerto Rico’s highest point, is often overlooked in favor of the El Yunque National Forest. However, those who make the trip to the understated forest aren’t likely to regret it.Continue

Get Soaked at Niagara Falls; Canada & U.S.

Niagara Falls; Canada & U.S.

Visitors to Niagara Falls should plan their trip with two caveats.

Firstly, Niagara Falls straddles both the United States and Canada; the Canadian side is much, much more interesting, so be sure to bring your passport/visa if necessary. The Canadian town of Niagara Falls, just two miles (3 km) north of the falls, has plenty of nightlife, casinos, and cafes.

Still too busy for your tastes? Then consider the (relatively) smaller Niagara-on-the-Lake, located 16 miles (26 km) downstream.  But there’s a problem: lots of people flock there during the busy summer months. So no matter where you go, expect crowds. Lots of them.

Secondly, take note: while Niagara Falls is impressive, the view grows old quickly. Aim to spend one night here, book a tour of on the Maid of the Mist (a boat tour of the falls), then head out to the Finger Lakes region for a few days.

So is Niagara Falls really worth it? Like many other “must-see” sights – e.g. the Statue of Liberty, Grand Canyon, Big Ben, etc. – it’s just that: a sight. And sights – no matter how impressive – tend to wear thin sooner than experiences. But that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy them for awhile!Continue

Grand Etang National Park; Grenada

Grand Etang National Park; Grenada

Centrally located mid-island just eight miles from the capital of St. George’s, the 3,800-acre Grand Etang National Park is a tropical rainforest perfect for hiking and exploring with the tallest point being Mount Qua Qua at 2,370 feet (720 meters).

But you don’t have to trek the highest route to enjoy the experience, visitors to this national park can simply opt to appreciate the expansive views from the Grand Etang Visitors Center where admission is $2.Continue

Endless Savannah; Rupununi, Guyana

Rupununi, Guyana

African plains await you in South America. Located in Guyana – between the Brazilian border and Rupununi river – the Rupununi  savannah  is a vast span of flatlands broken up by the occasional patch of jungle.

Caimans (a type of crocodile found throughout Central and South America) are commonly seen in rivers, as are the largest water lilies in the world.

There’s plenty of other species to observe: harpy eagles, jaguars, giant river otters and anteaters are commonly seen as well.

Put simply: it’s an isolated, rugged, wildly beautiful place.

Huang Shan; Anhui, China

Mountain Madness; Peja, Kosovo

Peja, Kosovo

Traveling in Kosovo is tricky.

On one hand, the people are warm, gentle and hospitable, while the natural beauty is simply staggering. On the other hand, tensions are always high with Serbia and there is always the threat of escalation.

This age-old animosity between Albanians and Serbs is making it difficult for Kosovo and Serbia to move forward and for you to walk in. But don’t let that stop you.

Kosovo has too much beauty to pass by, especially the Rugova Gorge; and once you are in, the only thing you will feel is peace and quiet.Continue

Wells Gray Provincial Park; Clearwater, Canada

Wells Gray Provincial Park; Clearwater, Canada

Don’t be fooled: Wells Gray Provincial Park is just as good as – and maybe better than – its Rocky Mountain neighbors to the east. Hard to believe? It’s undoubtedly more wild, with many of its peaks remaining unclimbed (and for that matter, unnamed).

Wildlife viewing is extremely common in Wells Gray. Black bears, grizzlies, timber wolves, martens, beavers and wolverines have all been spotted. But what really sets Wells Gray apart is its incredible hiking opportunities; in fact, there are over 155 miles (250 km) of hiking trails.

Which should keep you busy.Continue

See Iguaçu Falls; Brazil & Argentina

See Iguaçu Falls; Brazil & Argentina

“Poor Niagara!”

These words were reportedly uttered by Eleanor Roosevelt upon her first glimpse of Iguaçu Falls.

Rightfully so.

Located on the border of Argentina and Brazil, Iguaçu Falls is taller and more than twice as wide as Niagara Falls. Whereas Niagara is made of the three falls only, Iguaçu Falls consists of 275 separate falls, with the largest one falling over 82 metres (269 ft). These stats alone make it one of the tallest, widest and most powerful waterfalls in the world.

It’s also the most beautiful.Continue

Wild Kaieteur Falls; Guyana

Kaieteur Falls; Guyana

Like waterfalls?

Then you’re gonna love Kaieteur Falls. Sure, it ain’t the tallest, or even the largest waterfall in South America, but for sheer scenic beauty and raw power it’s not to be missed.

Picture it:  over 23,400 cubic feet per second (663 cubic meters) of water rushing over an 820 foot (250m) ledge and crashing into the river below.

Ask yourself: what’s right with this picture? Continue
