Scenic Rim Drive; Crater Lake, Oregon

Scenic Rim Drive; Crater Lake, Oregon

The rich blue color is memorizing.  Visitors often stand at the rim staring down upon the water like it’s a crystal ball that will reveal their destiny.  Crater Lake is considered the cleanest lake on the planet and the deepest lake in the United States at 1,943 feet (592 meters) deep, hence its dramatic color.

The lake sits atop a 7,700 year old and 12,000 foot (3,600m) tall volcano that collapsed inward on itself.  Over the years, rain and snow melt slowly formed the pristine water found at Crater Lake, which has no other inlets such as rivers or streams.

Volcanic activity has shaped other parts of the park such as Wizard Island, a popular sight near the southwest shore.  The outer sides of the volcano are covered with forest and meadows make it an excellent home to animals and plants. Continue

California’s Coast Exposed; Monterey, California

Monterey, California

A shiny red Lexus whips around the California coastline, fully equipped with a bubbly blond behind the wheel… her golden locks sails in the breeze and breasts bounce at every bump.

But this isn’t a car commercial… it’s Monterey where the stunning coastline meets the renovated tourist town catering to the young, old and all walks of life.

History of Monterey

Strategically located on the Monterey Bay (which is now a protected wildlife preserve), Monterey was a booming fishing and canning industry in the early 19th century.

A large number of fishing canneries lined Cannery Row which profited from rapid growth during WWI and WWII.  However, overfishing was caused a devastating economic downturn in the area during the 1950s. Over the next couple decades most of the canneries burned to the ground or were torn down.

In the 1970s, Monterey began to regrow as a tourist area with new restaurants and accommodations opening.  In 1984, the Monterey Bay Aquarium was founded which added to the tourist draw.

Today, 30,000 people live in Monterey year round which expands to a booming tourist industry from May to October when over 70,000 people flock to the area.

5 Day Itinerary For A Florida Keys Vacation…

Florida Keys Vacation Dream; Florida

There’s a saying in Florida: the further north you go, the more southern you get.

Nowhere is this more true than Key West – the southernmost point in the continental United States – which serves up an oh-so-interesting blend of Cuban, Southern and uniquely Floridian culture. It’s a place where anyone – from beach bums to party animals to history buffs – can find plenty to keep them occupied.

Above all, Key West is known for its counter-culture. A flamboyant collection of fire jugglers, stilt walkers and musicians appear each sunset along Mallory Square, while “clothing optional” bars serve strong drinks along Duval Street (see a full list of bars in Key West here).

Families and historians alike will appreciate the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum and the Ernest Hemingway Home (open year round; admission includes 30 minute guided tour).

And let’s not forget desert: Key Lime pie, a sweet and tangy pie made from local limes, is not to be missed.

Sure, Key West is the biggest draw for most visitors, but the more northern keys (meaning “small islands”) are worth exploring, too. Below packs in the best the keys have to offer in five days…Continue
